30 years ago with many 3rd generation family members as our newest
patients.
We are open:

8 to 1 on Friday
We are located 1 block North of the Don Mills subway
station at Sheppard & Don Mills.
After hours emergencies can reach Dr. Chung at home at 416 493 9440
anytime.
Dr Jim Chung is our newest
dentist and graduated in 1991from the University of Western Ontario. He has practiced extensively in
Northern Ontario, Vancouver and midtown Toronto. Dr Chung has also served on two dental missions to the
Caribbean and is a published scientist as well as a part time
instructor at A Plus Institute.
Dr Chung is married and has
a 10 year old son. He lives in the
Henry Farm community and tries to walk daily to work, unless it rains. Currently he is an avid automobile and
motorcycle restorer by day and amateur astronomer by night.

We now offer Zoom
2 in office bleaching. As seen on the television series Extreme Makeover, this system uses an
ultraviolet light to accelerate the whitening process allowing immediate
results after only a 1 hour appointment.
To celebrate April 2008 as Dental Health month we are offering Zoom2 bleaching for only $200!
We are planning to surgically place implants
starting in January 2007. Dr.
Chung and his staff recently completed an intensive surgical course with the
kind assistance of two patients from this office. Implants are the best method of replacing missing teeth
and in some cases the patient leaves with a new tooth after one visit! We will be happy to discuss this
exciting new service.
The Don Mills Fairview Mites baseball team finished the 2007 season in second
place after a truly heart stopping two extra innings in the final game. Not even a Major League game could
match some of the sports drama experienced this year!

We have recently equipped the office with nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This is an extremely safe and rapid way to change an anxious patient into a relaxed and happy one. Most sensitive patients who normally require local anesthetic during their cleaning sessions can have nitrous oxide instead.
Did you know that nitrous oxide is also the propellant in whipping cream cans!
People do not realize that
your dentist is able to treat most cases of snoring.
Snoring is the sound of
obstructive breathing during sleep.
During sleep, muscles of the back of the throat and tongue relax and
there may be some narrowing of the airway. If you have enlarged tonsils, or an enlarged uvula (that
dangling bit from the center top of the throat) or extra fatty deposits then
there is even more interference to air flow, tissues start to vibrate and
produce sound.
Snoring tends to become
worse with alcohol or sleeping pill consumption, with obesity and with age and
with being male.
Snoring is also a symptom
of obstructive sleep apnea. This is
a serious condition wherein a person stops breathing several times a
night. Each time they must briefly
awaken giving rise to gasping/snoring sounds and in the morning they will
complain of fatigue despite the appearance of an uninterrupted night of sleep. The tongue literally gets sucked
against the back of the throat cutting off air flow completely and the person
can wake up as often as 20 times an hour so they never get a chance to have
restorative deep sleep. The low
level of oxygen in the blood can contribute to high blood pressure, stroke and
heart attacks.
It has been estimated that
in North America 9% of women and 24% of men between the ages of 30 and 60 have
some degree of obstructive sleep apnea.
As the population continues to age this type of problem may become more
prevalent.
As in all matters
pertaining to health, change in behavior is the first step which means giving
up alcohol, drugs, tobacco and weight.
Surgery to increase the size of the airway by removing the tonsils,
uvula and resculpting the soft palate may alleviate snoring but can be wrought
with painful recovery.
Medical devices known as CPAP can be strapped to ones face at night and
can keep the airway open with pressurized air blowing through but is as
uncomfortable as it sounds.
Perhaps the most option is
one that your dentist can provide.
We can make a modified orthodontic retainer that gently keeps your lower
jaw slightly open and forward, keeping your tongue away from the back of the
throat and enlarging the airway. The device is adjustable so the correct
position of the lower jaw that eliminates snoring can be customized to each
individual.
It is important that a
complete medical evaluation is performed to diagnose the presence and severity
of any sleep apnea and will include spending a night at a sleep clinic.
Anti snore devices can be
bought at the drug store but they are not adjustable and are of the one size
fits all variety. Often time
supplemental medical insurance will pay for devices made by a dentist even if
dental insurance itself does not cover the fees.
Don Mills Fairview Dental is now visiting the Donway
Place one Friday per month to take care of the dental needs of our
Seniors. It has proven to be a
wonderful experience for all involved.
